Below is a direct quote from the original promotional flyer.

“The present century’s mural painting in Mexico appeared when a group of artists — revolutionary in their vision of art and social existence — began to paint the life and history of the people. Here, from the start art proclaimed itself revolutionary, dedicated and militant.

THE MEXICAN MURALS: A REVOLUTION ON THE WALLS (a 30 minute videotape) examines these monumental creations not only for their great aesthetic value, but also as an essential and fascinating part of Mexico’s history.

Originally conceived as a means to educate a basically illiterate population, these murals are living examples of the successful marriage of art and political thought. When viewed as an entire body of work, these controversial murals are among the finest examples of socially significant art.

The program focuses on the murals of the three major artists of the period: Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The entire evolution of the mural movement can be seen in the work of these three men.

The program is written and presented by John Baldwin, Professor of Art at Ohio University. An expert on the Mexican Murals, Baldwin studied in Mexico for 13 years. At one point he assisted Mexican muralist Siqueiros on a mural project. Baldwin’s expertise and personal insight provide for a highly informative as well as entertaining program.

THE MEXICAN MURALS: A REVOLUTION ON THE WALLS is a valuable resource for Latin American Studies. The program is also very useful in art, art history, Mexican history, and sociology disciplines.”
